Microsoft Purview Data Protection – Creating your First DLP Policy – Video

For my first post of the year I’m actually going to point you to my YouTube channel.  I created an overview of Microsoft Purview’s Data Loss Prevention feature and a walkthrough to create your first DLP Policy.   Just a quick overview of a DLP policy and what the video will cover:

The intent of a Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policy is to help control the flow of data—specifically the data your organization considers sensitive. This can include financial information, employee personally identifiable information (PII), internal budgets, or strategic documents. For example, files stored in a SharePoint site within a Microsoft 365 tenant may be shared, either intentionally or accidentally, with users who are not authorized to access them. These users could be internal, external, or both. DLP is designed to stop or, at minimum, tightly control how this sensitive data moves beyond its intended audience.

Before diving into policy configuration, it’s helpful to understand the high-level components of a DLP policy. At its core, a policy acts as a container for the controls you want to enforce. It defines the type of data you want to protect, whether across Microsoft 365 workloads or cloud applications monitored through browser or network controls. The policy also determines which data classification templates are used—such as financial, medical, private, or custom-defined categories—and where the policy is deployed.

Within the policy are one or more rules, which are the elements that actually take action. Each rule has three main parts. The first is the condition, which defines what the policy is looking for, such as sensitive content being shared externally or restricted data shared internally. The second is the action, which specifies what happens when the condition is met—such as auditing the activity or blocking it altogether. The final component is notification and reporting, where administrators can configure user notifications and administrative alerts to ensure visibility and accountability.
